Meridian runs an annual Summer Clerkship Program and a Graduate Program.
Summer Clerkship Program
We provide an annual Summer Clerkship Program in our Melbourne office which offers up to four placements (of two weeks' duration) to law students in their penultimate year of study. You will have the opportunity to spend time in placements that may include our insurance law, health law, property and public liability and corporate and commercial law areas .
We offer students the opportunity to experience 'real' legal problems and work with our lawyers to deliver 'real' solutions to meet the needs of our clients. You will have the opportunity to observe our team in action and participate in client meetings, in a court room, attending events and have direct access to and be mentored by Principals and senior team members.
Having a previous summer clerk as your 'buddy' will provide you with insights on their experience and enable you to be supported throughout your Program.
Our objective is to provide you with an insightful look at how our firm operates, provide you with learning and development experiences to showcase your legal skills in a collaborative and supportive environment.
At the end of our Summer Clerkship Program, our summer clerks will be assessed for participation in our Graduate Program.
Here's what some of our previous summer clerks had to say:
'My clerkship at Meridian Lawyers has been three fantastic weeks of direct exposure to the intricacies of health and insurance law. I have had the opportunity to be exposed to unique and interesting matters that challenge me to think both practically and innovatively… Another thing that is important to me, and unique to my experience at Meridian as a person with a disability is the way in which I was seamlessly accommodated at Meridian. Not only were my accessibility needs met, but I was never made to feel like this was an issue for anyone, and every member of the team was keen to learn how to best support me.'
Abbey Dalton | Summer Clerk | February 2020
'My three weeks at Meridian during the Summer Clerkship Program have been an exciting and challenging learning experience. The Principals at Meridian are all incredibly approachable and were genuinely interested in my learning and development. Not only have I been given plenty of opportunities to showcase my legal skills through real client work, I have also attended a variety of mediations, disciplinary hearings and informal conferences.'
Lucy Merrett | Summer Clerk | December 2019
'I am very grateful for the autonomy I was given during my clerkship, and the opportunities provided to problem solve on my own… I knew that assistance was always available from all members of the team if I needed it. I felt that I really got the 'real' experience of working in a firm from the work and tasks provided to me, especially actual client contact and legally analysing a situation.'
Bevan Wang | Summer Clerk | 2019
'I am incredibly grateful that I had the opportunity to clerk at Meridian and experience first-hand what a positive, professional and friendly firm it is. The mentoring I received and the diverse range of legal work that I undertook has prepared me to take the leap from law student to graduate lawyer. I would highly recommend a clerkship at Meridian to anyone who is looking to be challenged and engaged while at the same time having a lot of fun as part of a team of welcoming and inspiring lawyers.'
Anna McBean | Summer Clerk | November 2018
We offer Graduate placements annually with the number of positions on offer based on our recruitment needs at the time.
Your Graduate Program will enable you to experience a deeper insight of up to three practice areas, working alongside senior lawyers to guide and mentor you. Our objective is to provide you with the hands on experience you need to make an informed decision about the area in which you'd like to specialise. We aim to provide you with practical skills and foundation that will enable you to build your legal career with Meridian.
Application Process Overview – for both Summer Clerks and Graduate Traineeships
As part of the application process all applications are required to provide:
Applicants will also be required to complete a questionnaire responding to questions about their preference to undertake a placement in December or February, the year they will complete their degree, their legal areas of interest, and the reasons for why they wish to work at Meridian.
If your application is screened successfully and you proceed to first round interviews, you will meet with two of our Health and Insurance Litigation Principals. You will have the opportunity to discuss your background (legal experience, studies and interests outside of work) and the legal areas you are most passionate about, in addition to your interest in working with our firm. Second round interviews are designed to find out more details about your background, your interest in the firm as well as the practice areas you are most interested in pursuing.
The common theme throughout our successfully recruited Summer Clerks is that they are well balanced candidates - demonstrating well-rounded experience, a consistent academic record as well as interests/hobbies outside of their work and study.
If you are a successful applicant during either the Summer Clerk or Graduate Traineeship process, you will be required to undergo relevant online background checks (ie: reference checks, Fit2Work and Police checks which are run by our parent company Guild Group Holdings).
